Backup and Disaster Recovery

Low cost tape backup systems

In its simplest form, let Bristol Systems help you set up your backup procedure.  Nothing is worse than losing a bunch of files and then finding out that your backups of these files are no good!  Even the simplest backup routine should address:

  • Frequency of backup
  • Labeling of the backup media
  • Verification of the backups
  • Rotation of the backup media
  • Archiving
  • Disaster recovery

Actually, it isn't the backup that is interesting, it is the file recovery.  How fast can it be done?  Can it be done without technical assistance?  Can you really recover the data that you need?  Can you recover a specific version of a file that existed at a specified point of time in the past?

Recovering from a disaster such as a major fire or earthquake is relatively easy if there is a well thought out and well-executed disaster recovery plan.

  • Replacing or restoring the premises
  • Replacing or restoring the hardware and cabling
  • Replacing or restoring the software
  • Replacing or restoring the user environments
  • Restoring the data

Note that "replacing" the data isn't often an option.  If you actually lose all of your data, you will probably lose the company.  This is why archive copies of your data must be stored off site.  Download our paper on Reliable Storage for further information.  Your system design and availability model should include your backup and recovery procedures.
