Most of the time, Bristol Systems does NOT recommend hosting your own web
pages. It is usually more cost effective to let your ISP or a professional
web hosting company do it; however, there are a few exceptions.
If your web site is huge, e.g. if it has lots of images, video, or data, AND
you expect a very low rate of access, then it may make sense to avoid the
surcharges for large sites that web hosting companies have. (One might
still be able to negotiate a favorable hosting rate.)
Another situation is for an site that is accessed primarily or exclusively by
internal users. This is particularly the case when the web site is
huge. Not only do you save on large site surcharges, but you also get MUCH
faster page access.
There are two main options for hosting your own web pages. One
is using Microsoft's IIS, and the other is using Apache on Linux. The
former can be very expensive, but it is required if the web site requires an
underlying Microsoft database or sometimes if the web pages are written in Microsoft's
FrontPage using FrontPage Extensions. Using Apache is usually far cheaper. Bristol
Systems sells both solutions. Call 714.389.4136 to ask about hosting your
own web pages.
